Three rates, one effective date

The deposit facility rate applies to banks’ overnight deposits with the Eurosystem. The main refinancing rate applies to its main refinancing operations, while the marginal lending facility provides overnight central-bank credit. These are distinct policy instruments, not three names for the same rate.

All three increase by 25 basis points, or 0.25 percentage points. The announced levels of 2.50%, 2.65% and 2.90% apply from September 16, 2026.

Read the decision alongside the policy message

The ECB retains a data-dependent, meeting-by-meeting approach and does not commit to a particular rate path. This increase alone does not establish the outcome of the October meeting.

Policy expectations can affect euro exchange rates and bond yields, but a rate increase does not by itself establish the direction of a market move. Other economic releases and prior expectations also matter when interpreting price changes.
