Japanese cash equities close on weekends, national holidays and the additional year-end and New Year dates listed by JPX. The table counts weekday closures only, so it does not count a holiday twice when it falls on a weekend.

Golden Week and substitute holidays can create several consecutive days without a cash-equity session. Derivatives holiday trading is a separate arrangement and does not mean Tokyo stocks are open.

Key points

  • Dates use Japan Standard Time (UTC+9), with no daylight-saving adjustment.
  • 6 May 2026 and 22 March 2027 are substitute holidays.
  • 31 December is an exchange closure in both years.

Golden Week and the September break

The weekday Golden Week closures are 4–6 May in 2026 and 3–5 May in 2027. In September 2026, the additional holiday on 22 September connects the holidays on 21 and 23 September.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Tokyo Stock Exchange open on 31 December?

No. JPX lists 31 December as a market holiday in both 2026 and 2027 for the cash-equity schedule shown here.

Does Japan have holiday half-day stock trading?

No holiday half days are listed in the published 2026 and 2027 JPX calendar used here. Do not confuse the normal midday break with an early close.

Why can Japanese futures trade when stocks are closed?

OSE and TOCOM have separate derivatives holiday-trading rules. This calendar describes cash equities and should not be used as a futures schedule.
